Gen X Communities in Florida: The Benefits of Living in a 55+ Community

Hi folks, in collaboration with ChatGPT I worked on this article. I edited much of it with my own writing and added in stories of my own. I’m a GenX fan of AI! But I dislike reading AI slop. When many people hear “55+ community,” they picture a quiet retirement village filled with early dinners, golf, and people much older than them. But as Gen X moves into its 50s and 60s, that picture is changing quickly. I should know, as I’m 57 and moved to my 55+ community in Fort Myers in 2020 before the pandemic. Yes, it is a lot of older folks who are retired, have second homes but they can be fun and it’s fun to be the youngest for once in a large community. It’s also easy to spot us out and about too, we just know when we meet. And in 20 years or so, the park will be filled with more of us (just older than we are now) as these retired folks pass on (sad but true).

You Can Have an Active Social Life Close to Home

Today’s 55+ communities in Florida usually include swimming pools, fitness centers, live music, trivia nights, food trucks, golf-cart parades, dances, clubs, parties, and neighbors who still enjoy having fun. They are not nursing homes or assisted-living facilities. They are simply communities designed for adults who are 55 and older.

For Gen X, that can be a pretty appealing lifestyle. For me, I don’t go to all of the activities offered. I’m still in the mindset of “I’m too young to play mahjong” so I’m saving that for when I’m really retired. But will GenX retire? Lol. That’s the next question for another post.

One of the biggest benefits of living in a 55+ community is having activities right in your own neighborhood. You may find swimming groups, card games, bingo, concerts, dinners, holiday parties, exercise classes, craft groups, pickleball, golf, and community clubs. You can participate as much or as little as you want. It can be especially helpful for people who are new to Florida. Instead of starting completely over and trying to figure out where to meet people, you already have a community around you.

It Is Easier to Meet People at the Same Stage of Life

Making new friends as an adult is not always easy. You actually do have to make a go of it and find things to do. As I’m still workign during the day, I found that going to the pool at 5:00 was good for me. I met many other people who still are working who also go at that time. If you love Yoga, then go each time and be consistent, you will meet people eventually. Same goes for any activity really.

Many of us no longer have children’s activities, school events, or a traditional workplace connecting us with other people. A 55+ community provides more natural opportunities to meet neighbors who may be going through similar life changes. Some are retired, while others still work full-time or run businesses. Some are married, some are single, and some have recently moved to Florida to begin a new chapter. You may meet people looking for friendships, walking partners, travel companions, dinner groups, or simply someone to sit with at the pool.

You Can Enjoy Florida Without Maintaining Everything Yourself

This one was big for me. I didn’t want to do any yardwork anymore or shovel snow. Or have a garage door not close. The park takes care of the basics, you need to still keep the house nice outside and do the weeding, or have someone else do it. My backyard can turn into a jungle during the summer with all the rain but it’s so nice in the winter.

Many Florida 55+ communities offer some type of lower-maintenance lifestyle. Depending on the community, fees may cover lawn care, landscaping, common areas, recreational facilities, security gates, or other services. This can mean spending less time maintaining a yard and more time enjoying the pool, going to the beach, traveling, or relaxing.

Every community is different, so it is important to understand exactly what the monthly fees include before buying or renting.

Amenities Are Often Included

A clubhouse, swimming pool, fitness center, tennis courts, pickleball courts, shuffleboard, and community gathering spaces can be expensive to maintain on your own. In a 55+ community, residents share the cost of these amenities. If you regularly use them, they can add a lot of value to your daily life.

You may also be able to take a golf cart to visit friends, attend an event, pick up your mail, or head to the pool. That relaxed Florida lifestyle is one of the reasons many people choose these communities. I have a golf cart that I bought for $600 (nothing fancy) and take it out to the pool, get mail, go to activities, visit friends, whatever I feel like I guess. I can take it out of the park but you can’t take it across the hwy or parkway. If you opt to not have a car here, everything is fast to Uber to and many people in the park offer rides, super cool!

There Can Be a Stronger Sense of Community for GenX

In a large traditional neighborhood, you may barely know the people living next door. In many 55+ communities, neighbors are more likely to see one another regularly at the pool, clubhouse, mailbox, or community events.

That does not mean everyone becomes best friends. It does mean there are more opportunities to feel connected.

Neighbors may watch your home while you travel, help when you need something, recommend local services, or check on you after a storm. That sense of community can be especially valuable for people whose family members live in another state.

You Can Still Have Privacy

I love my house. It’s quiet and everyone is asleep after my night gets cranked up a bit. I can have my music louder as I’m not in a condo situation. Neighbors are 20 feet away, love this!

Is a Florida 55+ Community Right for GenX?

Think of it this way, you will be one of the “younger generation” here, feels kind of nice to be younger for once. I would not say where I live is full of GenX’ers, we have a lot of 65+ and way more people 75+. But honestly, I get a kick out of hanging out with them. Many times they try to act younger and be hip and that’s good for their spirit. My favorite activity is going to the pool (think of it like a social hour or a bar with no booze) and there is always different people there. Most folks are very chatty, so just start talking to someone. “Where are you from” is very common here as no one is “from here” usually.

Florida’s 55+ communities are not for everyone. But for many Gen Xers, they offer something increasingly difficult to find: an easier way to meet people, get involved, and feel like you belong.
